I think we miss our childhood the most, not because of the lack of work or bills or taxes, but because of the lack of heartache. Our vision of love was still pure and innocent, our hearts unbroken. We could still look at strangers with kind, forgiving eyes without our vision being tainted by bad experiences. We could still believe in true, unconditional love. But, with time, that vision begins to fade. Sometimes it is brought back to life, if only for a moment. But sometimes we are left feeling more alone than ever, desperately seeking our other half; wondering if you've met them, lost them, have them or not. I think I know what love is but how can I ever be sure when we are constantly surrounded by failure, broken promises and misguided trust. I wonder if, perhaps, I will ever truly understand - ever truly succeed.

Emotions are crazy things. They are both a blessing and a challenge to us all. We all may handle them in different ways but it is a battle nonetheless. Sometimes we love our emotions and sometimes we wish we didn't have any at all. Sometimes we embrace our emotions, other times we don't even understand how or why they came to be. Some people hide them, some fight them, and some let them take over completely. They are a core part of our being. Without them, could we even be human? It is our emotions that create our greatest accomplishments as well as our greatest tragedies. Our existence consists of countless paradoxes and one of the greatest of them are emotions. I feel we too often forget this. We take our emotions for granted, never look deep within ourselves to understand them - we toss them back in our minds like unwanted junk mail or hoard them inside our hearts like maniacs. Perhaps it is time to stop simply accepting the existence of emotions and instead begin trying to truly understand them - begin trying to truly understand ourselves.

For years I have constantly sought to find the words to explain my thoughts to others. Some understand me while others never do and I frustrate myself and them to no end trying to make them understand.
However, it was I all along who needed to understand.
I understand now that - no matter how I word things - some minds just aren't ready for the information I, myself, have begun to understand.
It's like trying to fill a 1-cup pitcher with 1 gallon of water - it just won't work and that's ok.
Thank you, universe, for providing this experience so many times so that I could finally learn this lesson.

An Islam hate page was recently brought to my attention by a share on my homepage. Though I am not Islamic, I have several friends who are and, though I disagree with many of the beliefs, I respect everyone's right to their own beliefs. My first thought was to send the page owner a nasty message but I quickly admitted to myself that that would do no good. If anything, it would only fuel the flame to their hatred. So, instead, I sent them the following message. I hope that my response will inspire all of you to take a similar path when you come across a page or individual spreading information you strongly disagree with. Violence and negativity will always get you nowhere but, sometimes, a little maturity and respect will get you a long way. This is the message I sent them...
"This page is horribly offensive to millions of people. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. On top of your offensive page, you clearly do not even understand Islam. You seem to believe the extremists represent the religion as a whole and you could not be more wrong. I, myself, am not Islam but I have many friends who are. I have learned a great deal about the religion through my friends and from taking classes about it in college. Your page is terrible misrepresentation of Islam and religion in general. There are many things in many religions that I disagree with but creating pages that offend millions of people is NOT the way to solve the problem; all that does is create more hatred and tension. I am not a religious person - I am a spiritualist. I do not follow Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or any religion. However, I respect everyone's right to their own beliefs - whether I agree with them or not. If you believe someone believes wrongly then post about your own beliefs and perhaps you will find that you share more beliefs in common than you would have originally thought. Finding common ground is the best way to spread peace - not creating more ground in-between the sides by spreading hatred.
I highly doubt you'll listen but I ask that you please remove this page.
I thank you for reading my message - whether you've been cursing me out this whole time or not.
I am sorry that events in your life have caused you to have such a great distaste for Islam and religion in general; Unfortunately, your page is doing the same thing to religious people. They see your page and grow a hatred for atheists.
If you want people to listen - find common ground and work from there. Otherwise, your page will only attract like-minded people and chase away religious folk, therefore gaining you no ground at all.
To top it all off, the title of your page is also horribly offensive to those who suffer from actual mental diseases. They see images of these terrible people and "mental disease" used in such a hateful way that it offends them as well.
I would hope that this just didn't occur to you when you created your page. I hope that you find better ways to share your beliefs. Spread your ideals of a better world - not your hate of a specific group of people. Show the wrongs of specific beliefs and better alternatives to those beliefs instead of just the religion in general. Then not only will like-minded atheists listen to you but members of the religion you have grown to despise so much will listen, too. They will no-longer feel offended by having their religion slammed against them but may see the wrongs in those certain beliefs you disagree with or at least agree with you on the better alternatives.
I'm not sure if you've read this whole message but if you have then I thank you and I hope you take at least some of my advice to heart.
Namaste"

The Tao and The Nature of Confusion
Waking Times

"We live in a complex world and simplicity is often difficult to come by. This is especially so in the world of intangible ideas about things such as the future. What the world should look like tomorrow.

In seeking to manifest tomorrow, we participate in politics, religion, civics, activism, evangelism and so on, consuming ourselves with outwardly organizational efforts to tweak the future to our liking. Virtuous as it may be to volunteer, stump, debate and donate, the genuine source of our societal problems goes overlooked by most.

The true nature of mankind can not be hidden from time. The Tao Teh Ching effectively captured the truest essence of human nature 2500 years ago, and returning to its simple wisdom can help us to overcome the confusion about the nature of our world.

The deep insights offered by this timeless text shows us how can genuinely affect change in this world. And that is by addressing the root of our problems: the self.

Ponder this beautiful passage from the Tao Te Ching, #38:

One of subtle universal nature
is not conscious of being virtuous,
therefore, he is truly virtuous.

One of partial virtue attempts to live up to
an external standard of virtue.

Therefore, he is not truly virtuous.

One of whole virtue does not need to do anything
in order to be virtuous,
because virtue is the very essence
of one’s true nature.

But, one of partial virtue believes that something
must be done in order to prove that he is virtuous.

Thus, partial virtue becomes prevalent
when people fail to follow their own true nature.

Benevolence becomes prevalent
when people fail to be naturally kind.

Etiquette becomes prevalent
when people fail to be righteous and considerate.

When people find no response with etiquette,
they roll up their sleeves
and force others to respond to them.

When people stray from the subtle way of universal nature,
they can no longer perceive their own true nature.

Thus, they emphasize relative virtue.

When natural virtue is lost,
society depends on the doctrine of humanism.

When natural virtue is lost,
society depends on the doctrine of humanism.

When humanity becomes corrupted,
social and religious teachings appear
and become powerful forces.

When social and religious teachings become corrupted,
what is left behind is the empty shell
of superficial ceremonies and artificial etiquette.

When etiquette is emphasized,
it is because people lack the simple qualities
of fairness and kindness.

This is the starting point of people of confusion.

All of these man-made, partial virtues
are merely superficial flowers, a false nature.

When people begin to move away
from their own true nature,
it is the beginning of hypocrisy.

Clarity comes in simple packages."

My response:
Some days I feel so wise and others I feel so lost. Then I come across things like this. I over-think so much of this world - focus on all the complexities - and lose sight of what really matters.
Happiness is so simple if we can only learn to let go of society and return to nature.
Too many of us die without ever living our dreams because we were tied down by school and work when all we needed to do was free ourselves from those shallow expectations and follow our dreams instead.
Sadly, we live in a world that makes it almost impossible to do this. We can not simply quit work and live freely. If you have no job, you have no money - if you have no money, you have no food. In today's world, you can not just walk out and hunt any time of the year.
Because of this, it will be a slower process to break free of society. We must take small steps - such as remembering to step outside and focus on all the beautiful things we can see/hear/smell/feel/taste outside. To literally stop and smell the roses. These may seem like simple tasks but they will be the first drops that will begin a ripple through society. As the ripple spreads, more people will begin to follow. Change will begin slowly, at first, but - with enough support - will grow more rapid over time.
We must all come together and fight for what is right - we must stop settling for "good enough" and accept only what is right to our souls.

My Dream

I dream of a world where
All people eat together, drink together,
dance together, sing together
Laugh together, play together,
rest together, pray together.
I dream of a world where all love together and all mourn together.

I dream of a world that appreciates the beauty of nature but it blind to the color of skin.
I dream of a world where we pass on our nurture from kin to kin to kin.
I dream of a world where we all appreciate the holy spirit within
and all understand that, hand in hand, all battles we can win.
I dream of a world that understands our unity and appreciates our individuality.

This dream is not so simple, yet so easy at the same time.
A paradox of possibilities, the outcome so sublime.
Look past your daily stresses to the outside of your mind
and you will find the broken line between what's yours and mine.
